Le malentendu colonial - The Colonial Misunderstanding

A film by Jean-Marie Teno

In his film Jean-Marie Teno reconstructs the interplay between Christian ‘ethos’, colonial trade interests and the missionaries’ traumatic experiences, but also covers the current position of African churches and their political engagement.

Teno shows a complex picture of German missionary activities in Africa. Following missionaries’ tracks, he travels from Wuppertal to South Africa, Namibia, Cameroon, Togo, and back to Wuppertal.

There he explores the history of the Rhenish Mission Society, which was set up in 1828 with the intention of spreading the message and preparing for the colonisation of Africa 50 years later.

With this thematic introduction, we embark on a journey to a repressed epoch of German history and to the on-going colonial injustice. After the film – possibility of discussion and exchange.
